Guptkashi or Gupta Kashi, which is a fairly large town located at 1,320 metres elevation in the Kedar-Khanda (Khanda means sector), is in the Garhwal part of Uttarakhand in Rudraprayag district. It is famous for its ancient Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is very similar to the one in Varanasi (Kashi). The other well-known temple here is dedicated to Ardhanareshvara, half man and half woman form of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Guptkashi has legendary significance linked to the Pandavas, the heroes of the Mahabharata. Its religious importance is considered next to that of Varanasi or Kashi. The temple town is located on the way to the Kedarnath Temple of Lord Shiva, one of the Chota Char Dhams and Panch Kedar. It has the breathtaking backdrop of the snow-covered peaks of Chaukhamba.
DAY 2: GUPTKASHI / RAMPUR – KEDARNATH
Early morning after delicious breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive to Sonprayag. Then take govt jeep to Gaurikund. From here, you will start your 17 kms trek to Kedarnath. You can hire a horse or doli for your trek (cost not included). River Mandakini, one of the main tributaries of the holy river Ganges, originates at Kedarnath and flows through Gaurikund. Trek with other pilgrims from all around India chanting “Jai Bholenath.” Sometimes huge mist would envelop the mountains and slowly lift away, revealing a shiny blinding-white peak that threatens to rupture the skies.
On arrival, check in at the hotel. After freshen up, you can go for Baba Kedarnath evening darshan and participate in evening aarti. Post darshan, return back to your hotel. Overnight stay.
KEDARNATH: Ancient Kedarnath Mandir is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva which is 3000 years old and established by Adi Shankaracharya. It is on the beautiful Himalayan range of Garhwal on the bank of holy Mandakini River in Kedarnath. Kedarnath is a small holy town surrounded by snow-capped Himalayan range mountains and has gained importance because of Kedarnath Temple. It is a Nagar Panchayat in Rudraprayag district. Kedarnath is one of the holiest Lord Shiva Jyotirlingas out of 12 Jyotirlingas. Millions of devotees from all across India and abroad visit this temple to take blessings of Lord Shiva.
PILGRIMS – Going by helicopter: Early morning proceed to Sirsi / Phata / Guptkashi helipad to Kedarnath helipad. Later, proceed to Kedarnath Temple by walk (1 km). After darshan / pooja at temple, return to helipad to board the helicopter back to Guptkashi / Rampur. Overnight stay.
Optional: You can take helicopter tickets for Kedarnath to avoid the trek (₹9500/- p.p. approx.)
Note:
In case you are traveling by helicopter / walk / pony / doli, the return will be on the same day with night stay at Rampur. Those who are traveling by walk (17 kms approx. each way) / pony / doli have to start the trek early in the morning of Day 4, so that you can come back on the same day.
DAY 3: KEDARNATH JI – GUPTKASHI
